Sundargarh Town HS win Nehru sub-jr hockey title

Town High School, Sundargarh, made Odisha proud by emerging champions in the Hockey India 31st Nehru Sub-Junior Boys Hockey Tournament at Shivaji Stadium in New Delhi today. In the hard-fought final, Town High School came from behind to beat CRZ Senior Secondary School, Sonepat (Haryana) 2-1.

Dominating the proceedings from the word go, the Haryana school took the lead in the second minute with a field goal by Manish. But the Odisha School bounced back into the game with Ashwin Kujur getting them the equaliser in the 31st minute. Town High School clinched victory as the Sonepat School conceded a self goal in the 43rd minute.

The champion school received a cash prize of Rs 96,000, while the runners-up school were given Rs 64,000. Sudhir Kujur of Town High School was adjudged the best players of the tournament. He became richer by Rs 10,000. Milton Bilung, the coach of the victorious school pocketed Rs 8,000.

Government School, Kawnpui (Mizoram) claimed the third prize of Rs 32,000, defeating Baba Gurmukh Singh Uttam Singh Senior Secondary School, Kahdoor Sahib, Ludhiana (Punjab) 3-2. Rishi Srivastava, Director, Rockland Group of Hospitals, handed over the trophy and prizes at the closing function.

Earlier in the semifinals, Town High School edged out Government High School, Kawnpui (Mizoram) 3-2, while CRZ Senior Secondary School prevailed over BGSUS Sr Sec School by identical margin. The three goals for Town High School were scored by Sanjit Beck, Sudhir Kujur and Sushil Ekka.
